The Nottingham ladies were invited to Perth, Scotland to defend their British Isles Triples title which they held having won this event in Northern Ireland in 2009. They have achieved remarkable success, in fine style, recording a fantastic back to back win. In their opening match they played Scotland on their home green in an electric atmosphere before hanging on to win 19-17 in a nail biting finish. In the final against the Welsh winners, an all round team performance saw the ladies surge ahead early on and they never looked back to record a thumping victory, 24 – 2. All three ladies are a credit to Nottingham Indoor Bowls Club and the members are absolutely delighted for them. This title caps an incredible record of four national titles in four years for local skip Pam Cutts. Pam won the National Unbadged Pairs title with Audrey Pinder in 2007 and the English & British Isles Pairs with team-mate Sue Mart in 2008. In 2009 Pam and Sue linked up with Jackie Turner and won the National and British Isles Triples Title in Northern Ireland. They were invited to Perth, Scotland this year to defend this triples title and have won to record a quite remarkable achievement. All three Ladies are currently representing England in the International Series which ends this Friday. Club News, 17th March 2010 Gedling's Phillip Epton & Co have clinched a place at the upcoming National Championships, to be held from 9-18 April 2010 at Nottingham IBC. In a tight game, played on a neutral green at Erewash, our team of Matt Vickery, Alistair Hansen, Duncan Robinson and Brett Morley led for long periods but went into the final end 1 shot up. Gedling managed to produce a strong finish and picked up 5 shots to win the game by 4 and win the game. The win for Gedling prevented Nottingham from taking all 4 qualifying competitions for the National Championships. Nottingham boasts the qualifiers in the singles (Simon Skelton), pairs (Jonathan & Chris Holmes) and triples (Phil Bowles, Alistair Hansen & Phil Broughton). Club News, 4th March 2010 Phil Bowles, Alistair Hansen and Phil Broughton beat James Beckett, Mark Lee and John Midren to clinch their place at the National Championships. Broughton & Co raced into a 10-0 lead but John Mildren's triple fought back to go into a 11-10 lead. A tight game ensued and at 15 ends, the scores were tied 15-15. A tied end on the 16th end, with 2 bowls touching the jack, meant the scores were level with 2 ends to play. A good end from Phil, Phil & Alistair on the 17th end, with Phil Broughton playing a good bowl to ditch the jack, meant they scored a 3 to make the scores 18-15 going into the last end. James Beckett and Mark Lee both had a good end on the 18th end to leave Phil Broughton 5 shots down and under pressure. Phil played an excellent 2nd bowl to draw shot bowl. John Mildren had 2 efforts to remove the bowl but couldn't get it out meaning Phil, Phil & Alistair ran out 19-15 winners. Phil, Phil and Alistair will now play in the National Triples Championships at 9.30am on 11th April at Nottingham IBC. Good luck! Club News, 28th February 2010 Nottingham's mixed fours qualifiers lost out to eventual winners City of Ely in the National Mixed Fours Competition. Day 3 brought a victory over York & District 21-14 to set up a semi-final with City of Ely. Their opponents had only dropped 30 shots in their previous 3 games and were eventually too strong for our side, running out 23-6 winners. Club News, 21st January 2010 On Saturday 16th January, Nottingham IBC will host the Liberty Trophy Quarter-Final between reigning champions Norfolk and Yorkshire. Norfolk will arrive full of confidence after winning the previous two rounds. In their first game they crushed Warwickshire 155-87 and then followed that up with an 11-shot victory over Hertfordshire. Yorkshire have had an equally tough route to the quarter-final. Their first game against a strong Northumberland side resulted in a 2-shot victory (112-110), before a marginally more convincing victory over neighbours Lancashire 139-110. With a wealth of bowling talent on show from both sides, it promises to be an excellent game. Club News, 12th January 2010 Nottingham's Denny Cup campaign came to a disappointing end today against current holders Cumbria. Playing on a home and away basis despite the 400-mile round trip for the away rinks of both sides, the clash pit Nottingham against a very strong Cumbria team that contained a considerable number of current and former internationals. Cumbria dominated for long periods and ran out comfortable winners on three of the four rinks; the only bright point being a narrow win for Mike Kent's rink at Nottingham. The Cumbria club had won the Denny Cup for the past 2 seasons and displayed their undoubted quality, running out winners by over 40 shots. Rinks - Nottingham Matt Kime, Dave Adams, Russ Pearce, Phil Dickens Matt Vickery, Mark Lee, Alistair Hansen, Mike Kent Rink scores - Carlisle Phil Bowles, Matt Chambers, Ronnie Cowan, Duncan Robinson Michael Bowley, Keith Burton, Stuart Smith, Phil Broughton Despite the disappointing result in the Denny Cup, the club remains in the last sixteen of the Egham Trophy and the men's over-60's double rink. However the star performance came from Phil Broughton's rink away at Boston, running out 27-5 winners. Duncan Robinson's rink lost narrowly 18-17. Final score: Nottingham 90 - 49 Boston. The next round is the last sixteen, where Nottingham face a tough game against City of Ely on Sunday 20th December 2009. Nottingham IBC plays host to stage 3 of the English Indoor Bowls Association National Championships, featuring some of the Country's best players, from Friday 27th March 2009 to Sunday 5th April 2009. Club News, 10th February 2009 Nottingham failed to make it though to the Egham Trophy final after coming second best to a strong Desborough Maidenhead team at Wellingborough today. The Nottingham team had only one enforced change from the previous round, with Brett Morley coming in for Ian Griffin, who was on holiday. Desborough came out the traps quickly and went into a 13 shot lead after 2 ends across the board and maintained that lead to 5 ends, where they led 16-30. Dickens’ rink led 7-5, whilst the other three trailed (Broughton 4-6, Robinson 0-10 and Morley 5-9). Desborough maintained their good form through to 10 ends to lead by 33 shots (52-29). Duncan Robinson’s rink struggled for form and some inspired bowling from Desborough’s England International John McGuiness meant they trailed 19-0 at 10 ends. With 15 ends on the board, Nottingham had made some inroads into the deficit, but still trailed by 22 shots (46-68). Phil Broughton’s rink had started their run of fine form and led 19-11, however they were Nottingham’s only leading rink with the other rinks still trailing (Dickens 12-17, Robinson 6-19 and Morley 9-21). Nottingham pushed their opponents hard for the next few ends and, at one stage, reduced Desborough’s lead to only 8 shots. By the 18th end Desborough had halted the Nottingham charge and led by 19 shots (80-61). Phil Broughton’s rink, who had won 8 consecutive ends and picked up 25 shots (including a 7 on the 16th end), now led 31-11 but the other 3 rinks still trailed (Dickens 13-20, Robinson 8-22 and Morley 9-27). Desborough closed out the game well and kept Nottingham at arms length to run out winners by 12 shots. Sue Mart Elisa Griffin Stuart Smith Phil Dickens Lost 19-20 | Pam Cutts Helen Mason Alistair Hansen Phil Broughton Won 31-11 | Lillian Fletcher Lynn Murden Mark Roe Brett Morley Lost 12-28 | Jackie Turner Audrey Pinder Ronnie Cowan Duncan Robinson Lost 8-25 |

Club News, 3rd February 2009 There will be a different name on the David Cornwell under 25 double rink trophy in 2009 after our Nottingham team were beaten at the semi-final stage by Wellingborough today (25 January 2009). Playing at Melton Mowbray IBC, Nottingham team manager Alistair Hansen was forced into 1 change from the previous round with Daniel Shields coming into the side to replace Adam Pearce. Daniel came in to lead on Matt Vickery's rink, Dan Smith's rink remained unchanged. Right from the outset Dan Smith's rink pushed out into an early lead and Matt Vickery's rink struggled and this trend continued for the rest of the game. Wellingborough always kept their noses in front and despite some nervy moments towards the end as Nottingham pushed for shots, Wellingborough maintained their grip on the tie and claimed the victory by 8 shots. Daniel Shields, Sam Muir, Matt Chambers, Matt Vickery 12-22 Jonathan Holmes, Helen Mason, Matt Kime, Dan Smith 16-14 Nottingham 28 - 36 Wellingborough. Wellingborough go on to face Torquay United in the final, to be played at Lawson Park IBC on 28th February 2009. Club News, 25th January 2009 Nottingham beat Blackpool Newton Hall in a tense Egham Trophy Quarter-Final at New Earswick Bowls Centre in York this afternoon (Sunday 18th January 2009). With 5 ends across the board, Nottingham trailed narrowly 22-20, in spite of only Phil Dickens' rink being up (9-3). Ian Griffin's rink were drawing 5-5, Phil Broughton was 2-6 down and Duncan Robinson trailed 8-4. The game remaind tight through to 10 ends, with both sides equal at 37-37. Phil Dickens' rink had pushed on to go 15-8 in front whilst Phil Broughton went in front 9-7, Ian Griffin also led 9-7 but Duncan Robinson's rink continued to struggle and trailed 4-15. Blackpool had the better of the next few ends across the rinks and pushed into a 9 shot lead at 15 ends, Nottingham now trailing 54-63. However, Nottingham's players dug deep and clawed back the 9 shot deficit to bring the game all square at 18 ends, 66-66. With Nottingham on the charge now, having picked up 12 shots to Blackpool's 3 in the previous 12 ends (across the 4 rinks), Nottingham had the momentum and picked up a further 14 shots to Blackpool's 8 to clinch the game 80-74. Sue Mart Elisa Griffin Stuart Smith Phil Dickens Won 31-11 | Pam Cutts Helen Mason Alistair Hansen Phil Broughton Lost 16-22 | Lillian Fletcher Lynn Murden Mark Roe Ian Griffin Won 21-14 | Jackie Turner Audrey Pinder Ronnie Cowan Duncan Robinson Lost 12-27 |

Nottingham trailed by 10 shots at the 5 end mark (17-27). However, a spirited run between 5 and 10 ends on all rinks turned the 10 shot deficit into a 15 shot positive, with Nottingham picking up 29 shots to Northampton's 4 over the 5 ends, pushing Nottingham into a 46-31 lead. Phil Broughton (14-5 up) and Duncan Robinson's (13-7 up) rinks showing the way, ably backed up at home by Ian Griffin's rink (11-4 up) and Phil Dickens' rink reducing their deficit to 7 shots (8-15). At 15 ends, Nottingham led by 13 shots (61-48) and 18 ends Nottingham had increased the lead further to 18 shots (72-54). In the latter stages between 18 and 21 ends, with the game becoming scrappy & stretched, Nottingham picked up a further 19 shots to Northampton's 6, culminating in Nottingham completing a resounding, and impressive, 91-60 victory. Nottingham 91 - 60 Northampton Club News, 4th January 2009 Following a meeting of the Council of Management it was agreed that it is necessary to increase our rink fees by 10p per 2 hour session from January 2nd 2009. This decision has been necessary because of the fall in membership and therefore a fall in income. The expenditure for rent, heating bills, staff wages etc have to be met, although we have cut down the working hours of the admin and bar staff. The Finance Director and the Auditors believe that we will have a shortfall of funds at the end of the financial year and that the rink fee increase will help offset some of the shortfall. We hope that you understand the necessity for this increase, as the Directors feel that it would be irresponsible for us to ignore the predictions of a negative balance at the end of the financial year. Fortunately we have negotiated the use of the club for the National Finals for the next 3 years and the profit made during the finals will ensure that the loss is much less. We all have a responsibility to ensure that the Bowls Club survives this downturn in membership – Please help us keep this fine club going – ask your friends to come along and look round the facilities – if they don’t want to play – perhaps they would like to become social members so that they can eat, drink and join in Social Nights e.g. Fun Night, Race Night etc. A suggestion of a Patron’s Fund has been made by a member of the Club who has generously started the fund with a donation. Other members may wish to do this as well – the Council of Management has undertaken that such a fund will only be used for specific purposes to improve facilities for members of the Club. This fund is not intended to offset the shortfall described above. The money will therefore be itemised separately on the balance sheet. Please see Trevor Cutts for further details. Club News, 23rd February 2008 Congratulations to Simon & Derek Skelton who today made it 3 titles out of 3 in the National Father & Son pairs. Club News, 28th January 2008 Nottingham's Simon Skelton reached the semi-final of the World Indoor Bowls Championships at Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk. Simon, having already beaten Simon Stevens (England), Greg Harlow (England), Les and Gillett (England) to reach the quarter-finals, followed up those impressive wins with a victory against Steve Knight yesterday 7-5, 10-9 in the 2 sets of 9 ends singles format. Simon played Devon's Ian Bond today (23rd January) and slipped to a narrow defeat. Despite playing well and holding good scores in the first set, Ian Bond's final bowl was very influential and saved numerous shots. The set finished with Ian Bond scoring a 1 to tie the set 5-5. Simon continued his good form in the second set but Ian Bond began to find his feet and took a hold of the game, pushing into a 5-0 lead. Simon got back into the game and went into the 9th and final end trailing 7-4. Simon had a very difficult shot with his last bowl to make 4 shots and win the set but missed narrowly, dropping 2 shots. Ian Bond therefore progressed with a 1.5 - 0.5 win (5-5, 9-4) and now plays Scotland's Alex Marshall in the final with Alex Marshall going for a record-breaking 5th World Singles title. Congratulations to Simon for a fantastic achievement in reaching the semi-finals and securing an all-important place in the World Bowls top 16. I'm sure all the members at Nottingham IBC are very proud of Simon's success. Nottingham IBC ladies Pam Cutts and Audrey Pinder had a fantastic win at the EWIBA 2007 National Championships, running out winners in the Golden Charter National Unbadged Pairs Championship at Loddon Vale IBC. After breezing past the Essex County pairing of Green & Howard 28-9 in the first round, they followed up in the second round by beating Lester & Godfrey of the Adur club. A nerve-wracking semi-final game against local counterparts from Sutton, Diana Parmee and Doreen Lewis, came next with Pam & Audrey eventually running out 23-16. This semi-final win set up a final against Amanda Higginbotham & Kylie Hampton, local ladies from the Wey Valley club. Another very close game ensued, with the lead changing hands on numerous occasions, but the Nottingham pair kept their nerve and secured a fantastic win, racking up Nottingham's third national title of 2007 (to accompany Simon & Derek Skelton's Father & Son pairs win and the u25 club double rink win at Northampton in February). Our congratulations go to Pam & Audrey. Secondly, the club's under 25 double-rink team came through a very exciting, tense encounter with Banister Park of Hampshire, to win the David Cornwell under 25 club double rink trophy with a 39-30 win. Matthew Vickery's rink held off a late fight back from their Hampshire opponents, closing out the game with a 22-14 victory. Phil Broughton successfully completed the win with a narrow 17-16 win. The 20th end proved decisive, with a total of 7 shots being scored across the 2 rinks, with Nottingham transferring a 30-29 deficit into a 36-30 winning margin.
